One of the biggest challenges in HR is employee retention. Finding and looking for the right talent is just the first step. You also have to make sure that your employees are engaged and will stay. We’ve already listed some great strategies to increase employee retention before. But, with various reasons why employees leave organizations, it’s always important to know other ways to increase employee retention for your organization.
Strategies to Increase Employee Retention
Provide leadership opportunities
Your employees probably have talents and skills that their current job roles don’t require. And many employees feel that they are capable of contributing more than their present jobs. A great way to increase employee retention is to utilize your employees’ talents and skills by assigning them to the right tasks, opportunities, and responsibilities. Doing this makes your employees feel appreciated and trusted, and can increase their satisfaction, which in turn will increase your level of employee retention.
Focus on employee wellbeing
A happy workforce is a productive workforce. You have to keep in mind that an employee’s life is not just all about work. The full context of your employees’ lives includes their physical health, family situation, and economic circumstances. As professional as your company workers may be, there may be times where their problems outside of work may affect their performance.
The logic behind this is simple—if the company cares for the employee’s wellbeing and help resolve their private challenges, then the employee will spend less time and energy in worrying and instead redirect it into work. This is a holistic approach and requires a lot more than basic concern and inv0lvement.
Being able to show your employees that you’re there to help them with their problems outside of work can help to make them stay.
Prevent Employee Burnout
In a study done by Kronos Incorporated and Future Workplace, they found out that 95 percent of HR leaders admit that employee burnout is sabotaging workforce retention. There are a number of possible causes of burnout including stress, boredom, poor working conditions, being overworked, and underappreciation.
The good thing is that you can prevent burnout and cure burnout. Here are some things you can do to prevent it:
- Promote a team environment so that no employee feels left out;
- Set realistic expectations to not put unnecessary pressure on your employees;
- Emphasize clear communication to avoid missteps along the way;
- Recognize good performance to show appreciation to your employees; and
- Give break times to allow your workers to relax and rejuvenate.
Curing burnout depends on its cause. Considering hiring extra help may solve your problem with burned out and overworked employees. If they’re burned out because they feel underappreciated, there are many ways you can show your appreciation to them. Involving your employees in various tasks and assignments and making them work with different departments can solve boredom. Your employees don’t have to stick to their laid down responsibilities always.
It’s more expensive filling a position than making someone stay in your company. Now, it’s time to step up your employee retention plan. Adding the strategies above in your organization can help you!
