More than six years into our partnership, one of the country’s leading natural resources companies has approached hiring as far more than simply filling vacancies. In industries such as mining and energy, every new hire can influence operations, long-term costs, safety standards, and the strength of the people behind the organization.

From the beginning, the company recognized that recruitment plays a key role in long-term success but sustaining that success would be difficult if employees did not stay and grow with the organization. They needed a more consistent, technology-enabled way to understand each candidate’s potential, especially for roles where long-term fit mattered as much as technical capability.

Over the years, as the company pursued its people and technology transformation goals, our partnership continued to evolve alongside their needs. Today, People Dynamics Inc. (PDI) remains its trusted partner, with assessment solutions that have helped make the company’s talent evaluation process better, starting from the earliest screening stages to long-term retention and workforce success.

Why they wanted a better way to hire

When we spoke with their Recruitment Head, who oversees hiring for leadership and critical roles, careers, and internal promotions, one priority stood out most: making hiring decisions more effective through data.

They wanted to improve hiring quality through a more consistent and evidence-based evaluation process while creating a smoother experience for recruiters and candidates.

“Number one for me, what’s important is being data-driven. Because the data is important for us to clearly see where we’re heading. And also, to make our recruitment process more effective and more standardized. Plus, having a seamless experience as well.”

As their hiring journey progressed, it became clear that they were seeking more than just assessment tools. They wanted a clearer sense of direction and a structured, evidence-based approach to identifying the right people for their company.

Strengthening the screening process

To support this direction, the company integrated several PDI assessments into its recruitment process.  These tools had been part of their hiring process for several years and continued to play an important role in strengthening how candidates were screened.

According to the recruitment head, the assessment tools were passed on from previous leadership and kept in place because they provided additional and objective insights that complemented interviews rather than relying on interviews alone.

Among the tools they’re using is the Basic Mental Ability Profile (BMAP) (Formerly known as Basic Mental Ability Assessment or BMAA), a pre-employment tool that evaluates:

  • Verbal skills
  • Numerical skills
  • Problem-solving

It showed them how well candidates:

  • Understand written information
  • Work with numbers
  • Solve challenges

These skills are considered essential across many business functions.

They also implemented the DISC Personality Profile, a personality assessment, that maps behavioral tendencies across four dimensions:

  • Dominance
  • Influence
  • Steady
  • Compliance

This assessment gave recruiters a clearer picture of how applicants may communicate, respond to pressure, and work with teams.

As the company worked to make hiring more objective, they gradually expanded their use of PDI assessments. What began with cognitive and personality testing later grew to include tools measuring emotional stability and resilience after the team encountered particularly sensitive hiring situations. Each addition addressed a specific challenge and gave them assurance that candidates not only had the right qualifications, but also the behavioral and emotional traits needed to succeed in a demanding industry.

  • Emotional Stability Profile (ESP)
  • Tenacity Profile (Formerly known as Profiles Tenacity Assessment or PTA)

These assessments can examine areas such as:

  • Self-confidence
  • Handling stress
  • Independence
  • Resilience
  • Perseverance
  • Optimism

These are all essential traits for employees working in the natural resources industry to ensure safety, good teamwork, and efficient coordination.

The company now has more than resumes and interviews to guide hiring decisions. With PDI tools, it became easier to identify candidates whose qualifications, skills, and values aligned with the needs and culture of the company.

And sometimes, challenges also arise with applicants or new hires, so as they shared, PDI assessments gave the company an added layer of protection before they make an offer or welcome someone to the team.

Beyond serving as this added safeguard, PDI’s assessments also helped the company identify strong candidates much earlier in the recruitment process. While their goal was never to hire in large numbers, they still had to manage the reality of reviewing many applications.

With PDI assessment results available at the initial stages of screening, the recruitment team was able to reduce the time spent evaluating applicants without compromising the quality of their decisions. The data provided a clearer basis for determining which candidates were ready to move forward even before the interview stage.

“It has definitely improved the quality of hires because, as I mentioned, we focus on quality of hires rather than volume. Then of course, the standardization of the evaluation is already there. The output of the assessment is very critical in determining if we will push forward a candidate. So at that stage alone, we are already able to filter candidates even prior to the actual interview stage.”

This allowed the recruitment team to spend less time reviewing applicants who were unlikely to succeed and more time engaging with those who demonstrated stronger potential and better alignment with the company’s needs.

“In the early stages, we already know right away if we’re going to move forward with a candidate. So again, it goes back to the quality of hires. The assessment results provide us with objective insights, and they are also data-driven, which helps us filter candidates as well.”

As a result, the company has built a stronger talent pool and a more streamlined approach to narrowing large applicant pools. With a clearer basis for evaluation, the recruitment team can now move candidates forward with greater confidence, knowing they are identifying individuals with the highest potential to succeed.

Stronger retention and greater value from every hire

What began as an effort to improve the quality of hiring decisions eventually delivered results that extended far beyond the recruitment stage. As the company became more effective at identifying candidates whose qualifications, behavioral tendencies, and personal strengths aligned with the demands of the role, they also began to see a meaningful difference in how long employees stayed and how much value they contributed over time.

“So, they do stay longer. Candidate retention has already exceeded what we had previously. No one has resigned within six months.”

For the client, this result was especially significant because early resignations often lead to wasted recruitment, onboarding, and training costs.

“In terms of recruitment benefits, of course there’s the issue of cost leakage. If someone resigns right away, then it becomes wasted cost across all aspects end to end. So, because of that, we’ve had cost savings.”

When we asked what changed after using PDI’s tools, the client pointed to the long-term value of retaining the right people and strong talent within the organization. For them, better hiring meant that the company’s investment in recruitment could continue to grow through each employee’s meaningful contribution over time.

“It’s more on retention, of course, and the value of the investment. You have recruitment costs, then you’re able to retain the employee, and over time you recover that investment through the employee’s contribution to the company.”

For PDI, this reflects our core mission of helping organizations make every investment in people worthwhile, while empowering them to create meaningful and lasting contributions.

Tools that grow with business needs

Beyond outcomes, the company also highlighted the flexibility of PDI’s assessment library as a major advantage.

“I would say it’s the depth of the assessments and the range of choices—we have quite a lot of options that we can utilize, and it is also integrated with our job-fit requirements.”

Aside from our assessment tools that focus on cognitive ability, personality, and behavior, we also offer skills tests tailored to specific industries such as accounting and technical positions. Most importantly, we provide them with competency assessments for managerial and supervisory roles, especially for outstanding employees who may be ready for promotions.

This range of tools gives the company the ability to match assessments more closely with different hiring and talent development needs. As their workforce requirements evolve, they can continue to rely on solutions that support not only recruitment, but also internal growth and succession planning.

The recruitment head also noted that PDI’s assessments continue to adapt over time, which is important for organizations that want their tools to remain aligned with changing workplace realities.

“There is always something new. It continues to adapt over time, and that’s what I like about it.”

PDI Team as a responsive partner

While the assessment tools themselves have delivered significant value, our client emphasized that the partnership with PDI has been equally important.

When asked about their experience working with our team, the recruitment head highlighted the responsiveness and support that have defined the relationship.

“They were very responsive and supportive.”

They also had the opportunity to meet with the Sales team and other PDI representatives, where meaningful discussions opened the door to even more learning and possibilities.

“I was able to uncover a lot of insightful information from that meeting.”

For many HR teams adopting new systems, practical guidance and timely support often determine whether a platform is fully utilized or left underused. At PDI, we have always made it a priority to ensure that none of our tools and services go to waste but instead remain valuable and consistently integrated into our clients’ hiring process needs.

From reactive hiring to strategic talent acquisition

Earlier, we shared our partner organization’s goal of building a hiring process that helps them select the best candidates, reduce employee turnover, and make informed decisions based on the results of our assessments.  A better process guided not simply through interviews, but through comprehensive data, a deeper understanding of the applicant’s behavior, personality, and capabilities, which makes their process more effective and efficient.

With that in mind, they also shared their overall experience using our assessments.

“Overall, the assessments are good because they give us insightful information and provide reliable, data-driven evaluations that we can use effectively in our recruitment.”

Aside from that, they also emphasized that the assessment platform has been not only valuable, but also easy to use and intuitive. From the very beginning, PDI’s mission has been to make assessments simple, accessible, and friendly for every user.

And surely, the clearest measure of change came in how the client now views recruitment itself.

“Based on the recruitment strategy focusing on modernizing talent engine, the implementation of People Dynamics shifted us from a reactive function to a data-driven talent acquisition.”

What was once a process focused mainly on immediate hiring needs has become something far more purposeful and meaningful. Today, their recruitment is more intentional, aligned with business goals, and centered on building long-term organizational strength by finding the right people and placing them where they are meant to thrive.

A trusted partnership through the years

The partnership, according to the recruitment head, remains an important part of their goal.

“I’d like to thank you guys for continuing to support us. The partnership has been long enough to sustain it.”

They also expressed appreciation for the responsiveness and consistent support of the PDI team and shared their hope of continuing the journey together in the years ahead.

“I hope to continue the partnership for a long time as we improve both People Dynamics and our company, as well as the services that we provide to the candidates and to your clients.”

At the end of our conversation, the recruitment head also shared that for fellow talent acquisition leaders who do not yet have existing assessment tools, they would gladly recommend this solution, and what made it even more encouraging was that they gave it a specific rating.

“…for those who don’t have assessments yet, yes— [I will] definitely [recommend], 100 percent.”

Every partnership brings out our best

More than six years later, we are grateful for the opportunity and time they gave us to revisit their hiring needs more deeply. Through our discussion, it became clearer how PDI has been able to support the very areas they hoped to improve: creating a more consistent way of evaluating applicants and making the process smoother for both recruiters and candidates. We are glad to see that these goals have been achieved through the use of PDI assessment tools, with the added benefit of supporting employee retention.

We also recognize that their hiring needs will continue to evolve, and we remain ready to support them through the next stages of their people and technology transformation goals.

While they highlighted PDI’s contributions to their company and shared how much they have learned from our services, we have also gained valuable lessons from them. Their day-to-day experience with our tools, along with their insights and suggestions, has opened new possibilities and given us meaningful direction on how we can continue enhancing our tools and services.

We truly take their feedback to heart, and it strengthens our commitment to delivering better data that leads to better hiring outcomes for the exceptional organizations we proudly partner with today, and those we look forward to serving in the future.
